.: FLIPSIDE’S Singer Rotation :.

Oh man, the rotation. Everyone does their rotation a little bit differently and there isn't any one right way of running it.

We’ve looked at several different ways of how to do it and we’ve come up with a formula that is strict, but fair.

The number one priority in creating this rotation format was to ensure that everyone had a chance to sing and that NO FAVORITISM came into play.

So if you’re so inclined, what follows is an explanation of the FLIPSIDE ROTATION:

(FIRST ROUND)

• AAAA

• BBBB

• CCCC

• DDDD

• EEEE

• FFFF

• GGGG

• HHHH

The above is a mock sample of a rotation of eight (8) singers. Every time a singer sings, we record it. An “•” to indicate that the singer has sung in that particular rotation.

We go to the end of the round and then swing back around to the top.

In the meantime, new singers are integrated into the existing line-up. This line-up typically takes around 25-35 minutes to complete, depending on song length and how much time singers take to get up to the mic.

(SECOND ROUND)

•• AAAA

•• BBBB

•X 1111

•X 2222

•• CCCC

•• DDDD

•X 3333

•X 4444

•• EEEE

•• FFFF

•X 5555

•X 6666

•• GGGG

•• HHHH

•X 7777

•X 8888

The “X” indicates that this singer wasn’t in, or didn’t sing in that particular round. Now there are sixteen (16) people in the rotation.

Keep in mind that the first round took approximately a half an hour to get through. Now it’s going to take at least an hour to get through the second round.

So now sixteen (16) people have sung and we’re entering the third round. More people have signed up to sing and so they get integrated into the existing rotation:

(THIRD ROUND)

•• AAAA

•• BBBB

•X 1111

•X 2222

Now, there are twenty-four (24) people in the rotation.

In the first round, it only took thirty (30) minutes to get to “HHHH”.

By the second round, it took around sixty (60) minutes before “HHHH” got to sing again.

In the third rotation it’ll take closer to ninety (90) minutes before “HHHH”  will get back up to the microphone.

(FOURTH ROUND)

By the time “!!!!” sings, nearly two hours have passed.

Now, one may argue that “AAAA” and the rest have already sung at least twice, but it would be unfair to penalize people for getting to a show early and staying all night.

If you were to have made it there during those rotations, you’d have sung too. So that argument is a self-serving one.

Also, at most venues, the rotation doesn’t get this large.

However at certain venues, like JR’s at the Sheraton in Eatontown, the rotation routinely swells to thirty plus singers.

I think the record set for the most singers in one night at JR’s, was sixty-seven (67) singers. In a case like that, singers only got one song in for the night.

So as you can plainly see, the rotation is very fair. If there is a criticism, it may be that it’s too fair, but anyone who comes to more than a couple of shows will let you know that it works well.

Finally, filling out request slips using different aliases will not be tolerated. When the KJ catches on, these people will be EXCLUDED from any further singing.

Similarly, if “QQQQ” signs up for a song, and then turns in another slip as a duet, listing “SSSS” & “QQQQ” as the singers and the another friend turns in yet a third slip with “JJJJ”, “YYYYY”, “ZZZZ” & “QQQQ” as a group song, then the entire group can blame “QQQQ” for having to wait three rotations for all these songs to get done.

If “SSSS” signed in with “RRRR” instead, and “JJJJ”, “YYYYY” & “ZZZZ” left “QQQQ” off of the list, then they all would sing in the same rotation. But, because “QQQQ” appears on each slip, then they will be spread out over three rotations.
